Is DirectX good enough for creating modeling tools? RRS feed

  • Question

  • this may seem a silly question. yet all the modeling tools i see on the commercial market and free tools use opengl. is this choice due to opengl having the ability to be used on no windows OS or is directx not upto the task?

  • I suspect you are correct about the modelling tools preferring to go cross platform.

Other than the cross platform issue there is no reason why D3D could not be used for modeelling tools. In fact you will find it used in specialist game content creation tools if thats what the developer was most comfortable with.

I seem to remember when installing 3dmax that it asks for opengl or directx for the main interface.

  • well i wasn't aware of 3dsmax having a choice. :)

i was curious because i wondered about creating my own tools and would prefer to stick with directx. yet was a bit worried by the choice for such modeling tools.
