Blank tiles in Bing Maps 3D or Virtual Earth RRS feed

  • Question

  • I know that it is pretty easy to set the surface imagery tiles in the 2D Bing maps API to dissapear with entities.clear as shown in the example here: http://www.bingmapsportal.com/ISDK/AjaxV7#TileLayers4

Is it possible to do the same thing in the 3D Bing maps API? I would like to be able to see the part of my kml or shapefile that extends below the surface without elevating it. Esentially, I am looking for a way to make a UI to change the transparency of the imagery tiles. There are huge applications for this in field like Civil Engineering, Archeology, Geology, Hydrology, Lithography, Carst Studies, and more. Google Maps won't do it but I bet if Microsoft got a jump on this they would have one big up over Google.

Thanks in advance for any input.

  • The 3D control use Bing Maps v6.3. Tile layers work in both 2D and 3D maps if using the v6.3 control. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb429629.aspx This does support transparency.

Note that the Bing Maps 3D API was deprecated several years ago. It's not recommended to do any new development against it. Also, the v6.3 control is old and hasn't been updated in nearly 3 years. The next update to this API will likely be to deprecate it. It is also not recommended to do any new development using that old control either.
