Migration question - 2007 to 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I was wondering if it's possible to do a database upgrade/migration for MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010 while leaving the existing production environment intact and running while the new environment is configured and all data verified.  Then to just "cut over" and make the new environment live when ready?  Or will this cause conflicts?

    Thanks in advance,
    Veronica

  • You could do this Veronica,

Build your new 2010 farm exactly as you would like it, configuring all your services etc and then you migrate over sites at your leisure, just repoint your DNS to the Front ends on your new 2010 farm.

If you're intention is to "cut over" you can carry out any necessary testing on your new environment and then migrate again with the up-to-date databases.

  • Hi,

Also you can configure Content Database as Read only from SQL Server until you finish from migration so no conflicts

  • Thank you, both of you.  I just wanted to make sure there would be no issues with us having databases with the same names in two separate environments (shouldn't be but one never knows).

Paul, that's what we were thinking of doing so thank you.  I was hoping it would be as simple as a re-point of DNS.  I can't set this as read-only for a longer period of time as these are production environments so I will most likely do as you suggest.  I just want to make sure there will be no issues with the sites and their content before we "go live."

Thanks again and much appreciated for the quick response!
