Set the default pricing tier for newly created databases RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're creating new test databases on an existing sql server on demand using just a plain old sql "create database" command via sql server username/password.

    For a long time, databases created like this were in the S0 pricing tier. Now the default seems to be Gen5 which is much more expensive.

    Is it possible on the azure sql server level to set the default pricing tier for newly created databases?

    I didn't see any way to set the default pricing tier.

    With you CREATE DATABASE query, you could have parameter for service objective. See: Create Azure database

    SERVICE_OBJECTIVE = 'S0'

    Or you can have additional ALTER DATABASE to set the pricing tier right after creating DB.
