CPU usage, what is considered high with multiple cores/threads? RRS feed

  • Question

  • If you have a bank of webservers reporting to application insights that are all configured with multiple cores, how do you determine when CPU usage is a bottleneck? Since application insights tracks per machine usage, not thread/core usage, the CPU process stats can often trend over 100%. What % would indicate an issue? For example: 4 cores over 300%?

  • Hi Dan,

It really depends on how well your application scales with processors. You can get an idea for this by watching transaction latency (request duration) as a function of CPU. As the transaction rate increases, the transaction latency will remain roughly flat until your system starts to have a bottleneck on CPU (or some other resource) and typically once in the bottleneck range, it'll "hockey stick" quickly.

    Thanks
