  • Question

  • I am unable to add windows mobile 5 SDK support to a new 'Win32 Smart Device Project'.

I have installed the CE 5 standard SDK .

And both the smartphone WinMo 5 SDK and pocket PC WinMo 5 SDK .

I am running Visual Studio 2008. I try to create a new 'Win32 Smart Device Project'. When I get to the 'Platforms' screen the only SDK's that show up as installed are 'Smartphone 2003', 'Pocket PC 2003' and 'STANDARDSDK_500.

I previously had the WinMo 6 SDK installed as well. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing all of the SDKs with the same result. I have also tried to repair both of the Windows Mobile SDKs without success. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Hi GremlinImp,

    Thank you for your post.

    Some clarification with you:
Which edition of Visual Studio 2008 are you running now?

To apply Smart Device development, referring to Visual Studio 2008 IDE, we should have Visual Studio 2008 Professional and above edition.
    Please check: http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/f/e/5feb6914-bcdf-432f-81c7-e386812b086a/VisualStudio2008-ProductComparison-v1.08.pdf
    (Please search "Smart Device Development")

By default, if we install Visual Studio 2008 Professional and above edition, Windows Mobile 5.0 SDKs for Pocket PC and Smartphone will also be installed. Thus, we don't need to manually install the separate SDKs for Windows Mobile 5.0 development.

Could you please help me to check whether you have installed Smart Device feature for C++ development?
Please go to Visual Studio 2008 Maintenance Mode via Control Panel >> "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) or 'Programs and Features" (Vista). Then select "Add or Remove Features" >> Expand "Visual C++" >> check "Smart Device Programmability".

If the feature has been installed but you still cannot find the following installed SDKs on "Platform" dialog:

I would suspect that your issue could be related to corrupted Visual Studio installation. You might try removing Visual Studio 2008 and reinstall it.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

  • I'm using VS2008 Pro - Both the Pocket PC and Smartphone SDKs installed with VS2008 (I've reinstalled VS2008 several times) and when I try to create a Mobile 5 project, VS throws a null object ref. When I try to load and existing project, VS Complains: “…the specified platform could not be found in the datastore. Install the corresponding SDK and try again.”  The SDK it mentions is “Platform: Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK”.

All works fine on an XP box. This happened when I moved all development to a new Windows 7 box. Then only thing I did that was a bit weird was to install VS2005 after VS2008 (it's a long story). Both VS2005 and VS2008 have been removed, and VS2008 only reinstalled many times.

Has anyone experienced this, and perhaps has a fix?
