    Hi there,

    can anyone help?

I am trying to find out how i can connect (best way) to an oracle 8 DB, i did notice that the oracle download site has some tools for ado.net 2.0 but it only works with 9i and 10g... and not 8..

So i found the following  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4f55d429-17dc-45ea-bfb3-076d1c052524&displaylang=en

which is the .net provider by microsoft for connecting to oracle 8, it sounds really good but will this work with framework v2 (ado.net 2.0)?

Or is there an alternative? If the above works, will i lose some functionality of ado.net 2.0??

Any ideas would be really great.....

    Thanks in advance

    Ian

The best way to connect an Oracle 8.1.7.0 and higher is through Instant Client. Download Instant client 10.2 from oracle site, copy all files in the same folder where .NET  assemblies resides and use classes located in System.Data.OracleClient. This work for me in .NET 4 project and oracle DB 8.1.7.0 server.

You can also install the latest version of Oracle ODP.NET and during installation select the CLIENT installation option.

Now you just have to be careful to use SQL statement clauses supported by Oracle 8.

For example, the PIVOT clause in not supported until Oracle 11g.

Use OracleDataAccess.dll instead of the deprecated System.Data.Oracle.Client.
