dismount-database cmdlet writes data in to the recovery database RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are using Windows 2012R2 server with Exchange 2013 installed. We have a backup of this database (using VSS). We mount the backup database and then perform mailbox recovery as follows.

We mount the backup database (after soft recovery using eseutils) as Recovery

    > New-MailboxDatabase -Name RecoveryDB -EdbFilePath Z:\DB01\DB01.edb -LogFolderPath Z:\DB01 -Recovery -Server exchange1

    > Mount-Database RecoveryDB

And then perform recovery of mailbox successfully.

    > New-MailboxRestoreRequest -SourceDatabase RecoveryDB -SourceStoreMailbox 'Douglas Adams' -TargetMailbox dadams

(mailbox is 220MB size and around 2000 messages with attachments) After recovery we dismount database

    > Dismount-Database -Confirm:$False RecoveryDB

At this dismount step we see lot of writes on the disk where RecoveryDB is located. These writes correspond to the size of the recovered mailbox. In above case these writes were around 250MB.

Now question is what and why it writes to recovery DB? (generally we assume that recoveryDB will be used to read backup data and write in to the new active database)

  • Using directory watcher I found following files being created at the location where transaction logs and edb file is kept

While recovery of mailbox following new files (more than 50) are created -
