Issues with Office 2007 and opening previous office files RRS feed

  • Question

  • Description of problem:
We are experiencing issues with Microsoft Office 2007 applications opening documents from previous versions of Office (mainly 2003 version). The issue is very intermittent and the problem comes and goes and seems to self correct itself without anyone troubleshooting the issue at times. Below is a list of troubleshooting steps attempted and can’t say any has assisted in resolving the issue. We have had several users that this issue has reoccurred several times. When the issue occurs it also affects IE 8 32bit from functioning as it hangs. Our current workaround for this has been to redirect users to use IE 8 64bit or Mozilla Firefox.

Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit
    Internet Explorer  8  32bit & 64bit: version 8.0.7600.16385
    Microsoft Office 2007
    Access version:  12.0.6535.5005  SP2 MSO 12.0.6535.5002
    Excel version: 12.0.6535.5002     SP2MSO  12.0.6535.5002
    Outlook  version:  12.0.6539.5000   SP2 MSO 12.0.6535.5002
    PowerPoint version:  12.0.6535.5002  SP2 MSO 12.0.6535.5002
    Publisher version:  12.0.6535.5002  SP2 MSO 12.0.6535.5002
    Word version:  12.0.6541.5000  SP2 MSO  12.0.6535.5002
    Infopath version:  12.0.6529.5000  SP2 MSO 12.0.6535.5002

    Troubleshooting steps:
    1.       Created script to auto run when user logins to clean paths
    rmdir "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp" /s /q

    rmdir "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\HN1AMAIC" /s /q

    2.       Created package to run CCleaner (version 2.35.1223) and set to delete windows temp files older than 24hrs. Also set to delete IE temporary files, system temp files, clipboard, memory dumps & chkdsk file fragments.
    3.       Also have manually cleared IE Temp files and  cookies.
    4.       Also run Microsoft office diagnostics by logging into office app select options for the application your accessing &  select Resources and select Diagnose.
    5.       Also downloaded  & installed the Microsoft 2007  compatibility pack  and issue persist.
    6.       Also renaming the user current windows profile and have them login to recreate a new profile works until the issue resurfaces again.
    7.       Also Deleting the files in the following paths:
    ·          C:\Users\%User%\appData\local\Temp
    ·          C:\Users\%User%\appData\local\Microsoft\office\12.0
    ·          C:\Users\%User%\appData\local\Microsoft\office\Onetconfig
    ·          C:\Users\%User%\appData\roaming\Microsoft\word
    ·          C:\Users\%User%\appData\roaming\Microsoft\excel
    ·          C:\Users\%User%\appData\roaming\Microsoft\office
    Sometimes a restart is necessary.
