Changing the character set to include Greek in MSSQL 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, we have a MS SQL db that presently is set up to use data type varchar (150). It communicates with our web CMS via jsp generated from a glassFish server.

The db is populated with data already but we now need it to store Greek characters which at present it cannot do.

How do we go about 'switching on' the ability to receive and store Greek characters.

many thanks for any advice given.

Answers

  • Change the column to allow it to store Unicode like this:

    ALTER TABLE Texts
    ALTER COLUMN [Data] nvarchar(150) NULL

Beware that each character no occupies 2 bytes instead on 1
