System Paging File Details (Balloon Driver) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a balloon driver which exports a few global memory related parameters.

The windows balloon driver have been built on the same lines as the linux as far

as the information exported by the  drivers are concerned.

My concern is with a parameter which is supposed to export pages swapped in and pages swapped out counts.

The parameter currently used to do the job is PagesReadPerSec and its write equivalent which i feel is misleading.

I tried to search for relevant parameter. The closest I could get is the SwapUsage. But However

it does not give further details.

I think or which section of the Windows Kernel can I retrieve :

          1. System Paging File Reads per second

          2. System Paging File Writes per Second.

I guess may be I have to search the file system components ?

Your opinions and suggestions are much needed.

       Thanks

  • First I would check the WMI classes in detail to see if you can get the data you need from them.  If not you will need to create a file system mini-filter and if the SL_OPEN_PAGING_FILE flag is set monitor the file operations.

  • I'm not sure there is a straight forward/API way but one of the ways do so is by filter driver that will track read/write for paging file....

  • Look at all of the info available in task manager. If any of it is relevant to what you want, you can use a pef counter to get it in your driver
