  • If you have a single domain controller in your environment, you can use Azure Site Recovery (ASR) for lift and shift migration of the domain controller. If you have multiple domain controllers, you need to set up an additional domain controller on the target site, more details about how you can replicate domain controllers using ASR (for lift and shift migration) can be found here:

  • As per my understanding Lift and Shift of Domain Controller from on premises to Azure is not recommended because windows AD domains must be deployed on Azure data disks and the host cache preference setting on the Azure data disk should be set for NONE.But most of the On-premises AD domains will be installed on C drive, if you lift and shift AD will go to C drive. Azure VMs C drive will come with read/write cache.

  • HI,

I would really just spin up a new DC in Azure which will support a staged migration using ASR. Once all servers have been migrated to Azure you can decom the roles.
