MSB6006 Problem With Build of Visual Studio C++ App

    Question

  • After trying to create my first C++ app, with Visual Studio RC 2017 from microsoft tutorials.

I'm getting the following error when I try to build or debug my application :

Severity Code Description Project File Line Suppression State
    Error MSB6006 "CL.exe" exited with code -1073741515. Win32Project1 C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\Common7\IDE\VC\VCTargets\Microsoft.CppCommon.targets 253

I just installed Visual Studio RC 2017, on my computer running Windows 8.

I had an old install on Visual Studio 2013, in this computer.

I have no clue on how to fix this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Hi IM777,

    Welcome to MSDN forum.

Please provide the link of microsoft tutorial, I need to check the type of your project. Meanwhile, select and install C++/CLI support in visual studio installer.

The compiler crashes with -1073741515 == 0xC0000135 == STATUS_DLL_NOT_FOUND, you could download Process Monitor from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx to diagnose this, you'll see the CL.EXE process searching for a DLL and not finding it.

    Best regards,

    Joyce

I can't access anymore to Visual Studio. Also I'm running Windows 8 on this computer and never updated to 8.1, should I do the update now and reinstall Visual Studio to solve the problem ?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your update.

    >>Package 'Win10SDK_10.0.14393.795,version=10.0.14393.79501' failed to install.

Firstly, please check if you are on a domain and your domain account have local admin rights.

Since the log indicates “Fatal error during installation”, I think you need to reinstall visual studio 2017.

you can try to remove the existing VS 2017 that install failed before as below:

    1. Go to Control Panel—Programs and Features, if there has ‘Microsoft Visual Studio 2017’, right click it and choose ‘Uninstall’
    2. Try to delete the following installed folders: (you can back up those folders before any      modification, in case we need to roll back)

    • Go to the folder: %ProgramData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio and delete the ‘Packages’ folder and ‘Setup’ folder if there has.

    • Go to the Visual Studio installation folder (normally under %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Visual Studio) and delete the folder ‘2017’

After this, reinstall visual studio 2017. Besides, have a look at the system requirement for visual studio 2017: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/productinfo/vs2017-system-requirements-vs

    Best regards,

    Joyce

    Thank you for your update.

Glad to hear that you installed visual studio 2017 successfully on windows 10, the failed installation on windows 8 may be caused by some windows update and could you please mark your reply as an answer which will be helpful for those who has the similar situation with you? Thank you for understanding.
