Upgrade 2008 R2 cluster to SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to find directions on how to upgrade a 2 node 2008R2 cluster the proper way.  I'm new to SQL clusters so i'm not sure how to proceed.  Does anyone have any directions for that?

  • Check this article How to: Upgrade a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (Setup)

Basically, for a active - active cluster, first move all the instances to one node, and upgrade FIRST the "empty" node, when finish, move the instances to the upgraded node, and upgrade the other.

For a active - passive cluster, upgrade first the passive node, and when finish, do a failover to the upgraded node, and upgrade the other.

  • OK, so in theory I can upgrade the passive, move the instance and then make sure everything works before upgrading the other node then?
