UK Postal Code Overlay RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to find out a good place to start looking to have some form of overlay of postal regions within the UK.  I am after showing the diference between BH1, BH2, BH3 etc (only the out code region...I think that's the right terminology).

What I am looking for is that the user can click within one of these regions to select it.

Is this something that can be achieved?

  • This can definitely be achieved. The only issue will be finding the boundary data as this is not available through Bing. I looked around for free sources and managed to find a blog here that had some: http://mdge.blogspot.com/2008/11/uk-postcode-sectors.html and file here: http://www.kbloradio.com/UKPostCodeSectors/UKPostcodeSectors.kmz The data is in kmz format (zipped kml file) and is over 10mb when zipped and over 36mb when unzipped. Obviously this is too big for an AJAX map. TO add this to an online map I would consider hosting the data in a database and only querying data that is in view. I would also reduce the resolution. I haven't played with the data yet but will see if I can get a good low-res version put together. Looking at the data it looks like it would be fairly easy to clean up.
