  • Does anyone know of a good tool to recover a lost password from a file I have?

  • You could try some of the things that come up when you Google for the subject.  That assumes that you are comfortable with giving your credit card details to someone who makes a living out of cracking passwords.

  • Even if you are comfortable with the idea, while it is possible to recover any password given time and inclination, the applications that can recover passwords (if you have no start point to work from nor any idea of the length or constitution) take an inordinately long time to run. Don't be misled by a trial version of software that can recover a four digit password in a few moments. Real life isn't like that.
