Corrupted/lost files in a folders (Win 8.1)!!!

Question
-
A complex quiz for users community. Something wrong has occurred, a disaster, to my laptop Asus X751 - for no visual reason, all the files/documents in the Documents folder, as well as in the Downloads folder, have completely disappeared, vanished !... Enigma, what might be probable cause for such a drastic elimination/ erasing/ destruction of the documents in the folders - installing of a new program Bastyon (might change the file structure?), failure in the OS Windows 8.1 ? (though neither the antivirus nor the CCleaner showed any signs of errata), some errors [suspicious activity] on the Hard Drive ?, or an attack (intrusion) by a hacker or else ?...
All the working files have disappeared dramatically, instantly, while no file recovery program could restore them, just some remnants...
So far, no one could comprehensibly answer this riddle yet...
I suspect, the reason might be in accumulated errors on the hard drive which haven't been checked for a long time (few months ago I replaced the HDD with the SSD), and the checkup reported a "suspicious activity on the hard drive" as well as some "inacceptable long file names"...
Would be obliged to know any reasons for the corrupted/lost files in PC folders :)

Right-click the file or folder, and then select Restore previous versions. You'll see a list of available previous versions of the file or folder. The list will include files saved on a backup (if you're using Windows Backup to back up your files) as well as restore points, if both types are available.

Similarly, I encountered the same issue a few days before after upgrading my system from Windows 10 to Win 11. The tasks which I have done, first I removed the temporary account and enabled the administrator account method. After doing these methods, the problem got solved. So you can apply these solutions, if there is any problem, can follow up on this article https://silicophilic.com/recover-lost-files-after-windows-11-update/ that might help to recover the lost files. Cheers!

Select Restore earlier versions by selecting the file or folder with the right click menu. You'll see a list of the file's or folder's previously accessible versions. If you use Windows Backup to back up your files, the list will include both restoration points and files saved on backups, if both types are available.

Hello.
Because the request doesn't make a chance to give one and 100% correct answer could be issues in hardware (bad blocks or corrupted HDD/SDD) or software - virus, malware, software problems or even trojan activities (to encrypt all the files in one and request the money after).
If you use backups of Windows for sure you can restore from backup. If not:
There are 3 big steps to follow:
1. Most important - to use antivirus and antimalware to scan complete system for any suspicious activity and delete if necessary. This is the main, for any actions computer and software should be clean. Is recommended also to check even before backup because you can have the same problem after as well.
2. Run HDD/SDD scans for errors with external software or chkdsk.
3. To run external software for the possibility of restore eliminated files. Mainly if the file is deleted but the blocks were not replaced with new files there is a chance to restore. Could be done in special services as well. For sure no guarantees for nothing.

This could be due to Malware or some other virus infection due to the software what you install.
First use proper antivirus or anti malware to get security so that other data and files can not be damaged.
Apart from it; to restore your data, you can do below things -
- Restore your system to previous restore point
- Select file and restore it to previous version
- try some effective datarepairtools which can repair and recover healthy data and files

Oh my, that is old. Have you been using that Asus laptop since launch? All of the components will have gone past an expiry date by now. It says on Asus' site that that's a 7th Gen laptop, but we're just finishing up with Asus' 12th Gen laptops! Did you install the older OS on a newer laptop?

Yesterday I upgraded to windows 10 it was the worst thing I ever did I have lost everything can't get anything back all software programmes lost, photos over the years not able to even use the system restore because can't get on it. My Son-in-Law works with computers and he is trying to get it up working but says no chance of getting all that I had back. Windows 10 has completely destroyed years of work Thanks alot Microsoft.

In this case, I prefer to use Windows 7 compared to Windows 8. In my opinion, Windows 7 is very good and supports all applications, unlike Windows 8.
