Visual Studio 2015 Pro and Visual Source Safe

    Question

  • Dear All,

We are planing to move our development platform from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2015 Pro. Currently we are managing our source code using Microsoft Visual Source Safe. Instead of moving VSS to TFS (Team Foundation Server) can we use the existing VSS in Visual Studio 2015 Pro. Is VSS plugin is available for VS 2015Pro ? Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Anish

  • Hi Anish,

    >>Can I use SQL Server 2008 for Team Foundation Server 2015 Express ?

No, you need to use SQL Server 2014 or SQL Server 2012(SP1)

    >>Can we use express version for companies?

Yes, of course. But TFS 2015 Express version is only used up to 5 users. So for companies. I suggest you'd better use TFS 2015 RTM

    Best Regards,

    Lake Xiao

  • Hi Anish,

    Thanks for your post.

As far as I know, it it not avaiable to use VSS in VS2015. Visual Source Safe is no more an active product and it is not available in Visual Studio 2015 as Microsoft stopped supporting it long ago and it's replaced by Team Foundation Server.

And I suggest you can use Team Foundation Server Express (up to 5 users) for free and use the Visual SourceSafe Upgrade Tool to import your project directly into TFS.

    Best Regards,

    Lake Xiao

  • In Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise, under menu item "Tools > Options", look at settings under "Source Control > Plug-in Selection". This incudes options:
    Microsoft Visual SourceSafe
    Microsoft Visual SourceSafe (Internet)

Change to one of these and the other settings allow the VSS database etc to be specified.

  • There is SourceSafe patch that you need to install so that Visual Studio would display the SourceSafe plugin in the Tools|Source Control plugin list.  Here it the patch

    Hope this helps
