Bing Maps to show possible routes RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

I'd like to ask how to show multiple routes from Point A to Point B in bing maps as per this article (https://blogs.bing.com/maps/2012/01/05/bing-maps-new-routing-engine/) ? When I looked into the bing maps interactive SDK (https://www.bingmapsportal.com/isdk/ajaxv7#CreateMap1) , I was not able to find it. I also tried using maxSolutions from https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff701717.aspx but I was still not able to show bing maps with multiple/alternative routes. Any thoughts?

I'm also using Bing maps v7.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Multiple routes can be returned when calculating a route between two waypoints. However, multiple routes will not always be returned. Additional routes are only returned when there are reasonable alternatives. For instance, when routing from Seattle, WA to Bellevue, WA there are two very reasonable routes to take, but the one that is slightly faster uses a toll bridge. In that case, most drivers would be happy with taking the other route which is only a couple minutes longer and has no toll bridge. In most cases only a single, most logical, route would be returned.

When calculating driving directions up to 3 routes can be returned. When calculating transit routes, up to 6 routes can be returned according to the documentation for the directions module in the Bing Maps V7 control: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh312839.aspx

One easy way to test this is to use the transit directions. By default it returns 3 results almost always. You can try changing this to any number between 1 and 6. Note that only one route will be rendered on the map at a time, and that the alternate routes will be listed in the itinerary container.
