Is there a way to set Default Master Page without using SharePoint Designer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using SharePoint Designer, one can select a page and set it as the default Master Page. Is there a way to do this from WSS or from WSS Central Admin?

  • Hi,

There is no interface in WSS to change masterpages, but you can find in codeplex a project (wsp file) that help you doing that. An extra link in the site settings page is added and an application page shows you which masterpage can be selected or/and changed. A webpart is available as well that do the same thing.

This project (SPMasterPicker) was developped by Renaud Comte and is here

    Best regards,

  • I have used the approach of deploying the master page as a feature and having a feature event that sets the site to use the new master page whenever it is activated.  Here is the link to a blog, all the steps are mapped out for you: http://www.mindsharpblogs.com/PaulS/archive/2007/06/18/1903.aspx

  • You can use stsadm extensions (from Gary Lapointe). Specifically, you need to use gl-setmasterpage command. You can find the details at this link:

It just takes couple of seconds. Once again, thanks to Gary for those extensions.
