How to enable debug logging for usbccgp.sys? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to debug an issue where the usb composite driver is banging out.  I've install the chk version of the driver but haven't been able to get any logging output from it.  I've done a lot of searching but haven't found anything that works.  I found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314743 which seems to say i could do 'ed usbccgp!DbgVerbose 1' but i doen't see that symbol when i do 'x usbccgp!dbg*'.  There are some other dbg things like dbglevel and i've tried setting those from the debugger but they don't seem to do anything for me.  I may be setting them too late since the composite driver bangs out quickly.  If those are the flags i need, is there a way to set the default value in the registry?

What else am i missing to get debug output?

    Thanks, Eric

  • If you look at the knowledge base article this is for systems before Vista.  I don't believe there is any logging you can get for Win7 in this area.  The normal check is to see if TraceView has something and it does not.

  • Have you installed the checked version of the OS?  That KB article refers to checked components.  Also what revision of the OS are you dealing with, much of this information was moved into WPP tracing (and not all of it is available outside of Microsoft) in later OS versions (i.e. Vista onwards).  Finally, in the past not all the USB drivers output much in the way of data even with the flags on.

  • Starting with win7 you can take an etw trace and view it in netmon. That should tell you what is going on.

  • I followed this blog post to get the etw stuff going for usb http://blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog/archive/2009/12/04/etw-in-the-windows-7-usb-core-stack.aspx

However, i don't see a provider for the usb composite driver.  Currently i'm loading the chk version of the usbccpg.sys by using .kdfiles in windbg.  If i did a full windows 7 chk build install, would there be a provider for usbccgp?

    Thanks,
