  • Excel internally stores dates as numbers (a number of days, to be precise), so it can sort them easily. And to find the number of days between two dates is simply a matter of subtracting the dates. That wouldn't work if you stored dates as yyyymmdd. But the ISO date format yyyy-mm-dd is a very consistent and unambiguous way of displaying dates.
