Issue with Querying Serial Number RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tried to find out the serial number of a USB device using following WMI query (using WMI tester tool provided by Microsoft).

    select SerialNumber from win32_diskdrive.

But I am getting a serial number '0'.

while checking the pnp_id we found the following pnp_id(Using the Device Manager).

    USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_KINGSTON&PROD_DATATRAVELER_2.0&REV_1.00\60A44C413BF2F0718628B8E0&0

while checking with USBDeview Tool found  serial number as '60A44C413BF2F0718628B8E0'.

Actually I need to get the '60A44C413BF2F0718628B8E0' as serial number.

why I am getting these issue!!

How can I resolve these Issue?

  • Are you quite sure you are looking at the right disk drive here?  Are you running that tool elevated?  Do you get the same operation if you run the query using PowerShell's Get-WmiObject command?

And if you have the hardware ID, as you show it above, have you noticed that the serial number is embedded in the hardware ID?
