WSS 3.0 sp2 "upgrade" to Search Express 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I know other questions have been asked along similar lines, however I'd just like to be absolutely clear before running this upgrade that I'm not going to destroy my existing WSS 3.0 setup which is working perfectly and without errors.  This is my current setup: small farm consisting of 2 servers:
    1 application server Windows 2003 sp2 (x64)
    1 database server Windows 2003 sp2 (x64) running SQL 2005 (sp3)
I plan to attempt this in our test environment first but I'd like to make sure I'm doing the upgrade correctly, so I have a few questions I hope somebody can help me with:
    1) From what I've read the searchserviceexpress.exe should be run on my existing application server.  Which account should I run this setup file with? normally when installing WSS service packs I add the iis central administration identity account as a local administrator on both my sql & application server, then log on as that account and run the upgrade with that.  Is that the recommendation with Search Express 2008 upgrade? or should I just run as domain administrator?
    2) I've heard there is a Express Search 2008 preparation tool, should I run this first?  the MS upgrade instructions don't mention this tool in the steps for upgrading from WSS 3.0.
    3) I currently have two separate domain accounts set up for my WSS Search service account and WSS Crawl service account, do I need to specify these during the upgrade? Will these accounts still be used by Express Search 2008?
    4) Once the upgrade is complete will the farm work the same way as WSS does now, except I will have the additional capabilities of Express Search 2008?
    5) Are there any other considerations I should bear in mind before doing this upgrade, except for backing up my farm first of course.
    Thanks in advance.

  • There is one very key part of the installation routine when installing Search Server 2008 Express on top of WSS 3.0.

At one point you'll be ask if you want to use the default site. You must choose one of the other alternatives (I use "create a new site" rather than don't create a site).

Because using the default site is the default selection you must be careful not to have done too many Enters when installing so it doesn't quickly approve the default choice on that screen.

Provide you use create a new site, you will have the WSS 3.0 default site on port 80 as before and MSSX default site on a random port number.

    - I have always done this using server Administrator. (As used for WSS 3.0 installation too)

    - I have never used any preparation tool. Basically if you already have WSS 3.0 installed you already have the prerequisites

    - pass

    - yes. you will however still have normal search (site / list) from the WSS 3.0 sites and extended search only from the MSSX "search" site until you make additional changes to the search functions in the WSS sites which are too much and too complicated to go into here.

    - none that I can think of.

  • Hi Mike

On my setup I don't have an opportinity to have this:

"At one point you'll be ask if you want to use the default site. You must choose one of the other alternatives (I use "create a new site" rather than don't create a site)."

Mine goes to manual process which I have to create Shared Service manually and then reactivating Indexer etc etc.

Is there anyway to uninstall this and come up to that option? Actually reinstalled this before and seems the same issue.

  • I've seen this question from a few people who haven't seen that screen.

Unfortunately I have no idea why they aren't seeing that screen. I've done this installation (MSSX on top of WSS 3.0) more times than I care to remember and that includes several times when writing my WSS 3.0 book where there were a couple of chapters on adding MSSX to WSS 3.0 (and search before and afterwards)) and I *always* saw the screen.

    Sorry.
