Is there a way to query JSON files directly from Data Lake?

    Question

  • There are methods to query data from JSON into Power BI from Azure Blob Storage. Is there a way to pull this data if it lives on a Data Lake? I am not talking about converting to CSV. I have the GitHub project by Michael Rhys for that.

  • It is possible to query data that is in the data lake store directly from Power BI: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/data-lake-store-power-bi/

Are the challenges in getting this working for JSON data specifically?

  • Yes, I am trying to query a range of JSON files in a single directory.

PowerBI doesn't seem to support that.

Also, my JSON queries arrange data through arrays.

  • In PowerBI, after you navigate to the file using Edit Query, click on the Navigation step in the Applied Steps sidebar. Right click on the file and select "JSON".

This should work for single JSON files or JSON arrays I believe.
