I need following steps in my P2V migration of sql server clusters which are on VCS and in sql 2000 and sql 2005 respectively:-

    1. What all changes need to be done in new Virtual machines if hostnames of each cluster node is changing?

    2. What all steps we need to do if all IPs are changing for nodes private, public and VIPs?

  • Hi Bipsy,

To migrate the SQL Server clustered instance to the virtual machines, it is required to implement the cluster environment (In your scenario, you deploy Veritas Cluster Server on your virtual machines.) with each node added into the cluster. Then, install the clustered instance one node, and add the remaining nodes into this SQL Server clustered instance. Finally, backup databases from your original clustered instance to the destination clustered instance.

The hostname and IP address can be different for the new SQL Server clustered instance. In case there are applications connect to the original SQL Server clustered instance, and not allowed to be interrupted by the migration to the new SQL Server clustered instance, you may have a look at the CNAME in Domain Name System, which can be used to redirect the client to the new SQL Server cluster instance. Please see: CNAMES and SQL Clustering on Windows 2008.
