How to increase database size of 10GB?

    Question

  • Hi there,

Here is my SQL Server Version:

    Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64)
     Feb 10 2012 19:39:15
     Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
Express Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) (Hypervisor)

My capacity Limit seems to be reached and I cannot increase it:

    Msg 1827, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database.

Do I really have an Express Version (it doesn't say it - the database was hosted before on Express)?

What license do I Need that I can increase the database size?

    Thanks

    Tom

  • ok, here is my solution:

asked my Provider and they are selling the web instances (in my case 2014 vor 30,- /month). So I will get a new Server with the new SQL Server web Edition instance installed on it.

    thanks all of you!

  • it looks like you are using express edition in which database size limit is 10GB, you can find the edition using below query

    select @@VERSION or select SERVERPROPERTY('edition')

  • Hi Nithin,

    select SERVERPROPERTY('edition')

    gave me this result:

    Express Edition (64-bit)

    ok. I was wrong.

How can I update to the next license that I can increase the size?

This clearly says this is express edition

You need to upgrade to Standard or Enterprise Edition ( license  costs money)

  • I found out that there is a Web Edition I could upgrade to that would help...

But how exaktly can I upgrade?

Can I just buy somewhere a license plug it somewhere in the SQL Server Software and the Limitations are updated?

or do I have to download a new Installation file and install it parallel to my instance and backup and restore everything?

  • As alternative ,  you can create a new database on the same instance  and use till it growths to 10 GB again. What is a purpose of your SQL Server db?

  • You need to download ISO with the desired edition. I would backup the database and save it in the safety place, then shut down the old instance and uninstall it , Then install a new edition and perfom restore operation of the db
