  • If you can get traffic from a central place like a switch, you can use Network Monitor or Message Analyzer (http://blogs.technet.com/MessageAnalyzer) to scan traffic. However you'll need to decode the traffic and filter based on what you are looking for. Perhaps a simple method to start is using Message Analyzer and the Top Talkers chart view to get a high level view of how clients are communicating. Then you can focus on the highest users of network bandwidth to understand what they are doing.

    This all depends on getting traffic from a central location, as any machine sitting on your network is not going to see traffic from other machines.  This usually means setting up port mirroring on your switches, and then using Network Monitor in promiscuous mode to capture the traffic.
