How to monitor for timeout issue RRS feed

  • Hi. I'm not a complete newbie, but not exactly well-versed in troubleshooting performance issues either. An analyst came to me and said his users intermittently report "timeouts" on their 3rd-party application which runs on SQL Server 2005 back-end. The application vendor has so far only added new indexes to their database which did not fix the issue. I realize "timeouts" could mean a lot of things. I'm waiting to hear back from the analyst whether he has more to go on, other than approximate time of day. In the mean time, I need your guidance on where to start to troubleshoot a performance issue without much information to go on. Let's say he comes to me again and says "several users experienced timeouts yesterday at 11:00AM". What tools would I use to monitor, so I can determine what was happening at that time? Do I run profiler continuously until he reports another timeout? Same with Perfmon? Where do I run monitoring tools? On the affected server, or on a separate server? -Thx
