which book to learn from

Question

Hi all,
I really need to learn how to use and administer sharepoint.
The problem is im not sure where to start. Which book to buy etc?
Can anyone suggest a study guide for me? Im not too bothered about doing the MS cert but I just want to learn and better understand the product.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Right now, http://www.amazon.com/Professional-SharePoint-Administration-Shane-Young/dp/1118495810/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363604767&sr=8-1&keywords=sharepoint+2013+admin is the only comprehensive admin book about 2013 out there, so not much choice there.
I'd also say that this page: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12438.sharepoint-2013-best-practices.aspx is an excellent place to start

I think these are the best ways to start to learn SharePoint.
1. Attend your local SharePoint User Group. It's a SharePoint community thing and hosted locally by SharePoint experts usually once a month around the world to talk about a specific topic. Bing "SharePoint user group <your city name>" and you should be able to find one.
2. Attend your local city's SharePoint Saturday conference. http://www.sharepointsaturday.org/default.aspx see if there is one coming close to your city
3. If you want to learn about SharePoin administration, configuration, and infrastructure design. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/sharepoint/ is a good place to start and it provides tons training videos to work you thought each important feature.
4. Microsoft has many free road show events or regional mini SharePoint conference available to public. Check our Microsoft website > Events page and search for one.
5. Lastly, Book ( I prefer above first because you can actually see it in demo or get your hands on) Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration (Todd Klindt (Author), Shane Young (Author), Steve Caravajal (Author)) is a read good read and these three guys are very very good.
Hope this information helps

Hello hyperNoddy.
Before becoming an expert SharePoint administrator (and you'll never finish learning), you have to be a good SharePoint user: the very first book you could read is "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Step by Step" (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780735627260.do) or "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Inside Out" (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780735627246.do).
When you'll be ready to start learning the SharePoint administration, you could read the "Microsoft SharePoint Administrator's Kit" (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0790145327314.do).Have a good study!
Bye.
