  • Hi,

You can still use the old silverlight portal to manage you AppFabric cache service.

Role-based Caching is something different! It enables you to use x%  of your instance(s) memory, for caching purposes only. And this cache cluster can run side-by-side with your Hosted Service Web/Worker role(s). You can even create dedicated worker roles, just to serve for cache. You can find more info about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/gg278356.aspx

    Hope this helps!

Why can't I create a cache through the new Management Portal?

Role-based Caching is not provisioned through the Windows Azure (Preview) Management Portal. Instead, Caching is configured as part of your cloud service deployment. If you need to create or manage caches that use Shared Caching, you must use the old Windows Azure Management Portal.
