SSAS PowerPivot Database on a Separate Server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are doing an analysis on what we need in regards to PowerPivot. Can the SSAS instance be on a separate server than the application server? From looking at MSDN it doesn't give any indication that you are allowed to have it on a separate server.

    Thanks,

    Don

  • Answer from the PowerPivotGeek:

PowerPivot uses an embedded Analysis Services database. This database is not the typical AS database but uses our new in-memory engine for high compression and extremely quick adhoc query responses without using aggregates. As such, the AS instance is installed directly on the SharePoint app server.

  • Still haven't found how to do this? Why does the PowerPivot SSAS have to live on the same application server as SharePoint 2010?
