Virtual server problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows2008 with Hyper-V, which runs a virtual Windows2003 machine with virtual disk to host Exchange2003.

At times, I find the virtual machine to be some sort of hung. When I stop the machine and try to restart it, it claims the (virtual) disk is non-bootable.

Restarting any of the hyper-V related services does not resolve. The only way to resolve the issue is to restart the host machine.

I cannot find any related messages in the event logs, apart from one where it states that it cannot start a partition, reason code "11".

The obvious way to resolve is to migrate to Exchange2007 on the host but there is no backup solution yet.

I started to use W2K3 in a virtual machine with a real disk when I had no problems. After moving to the virtual disk, the problems started, hence my suspicion that the problem lies in the virtual disk.

    The questions:

    - Have others seen the same behaviour?

    - what would be the best way to convert the virtual disk back to a real disk?
