Can multiple versions of SQL Server Express access a single database? RRS feed

I currently have a SQL database created with SQL Server 2008 Express.  With the installation of Windows 10, if I install SQL Server 2014 Express can both versions (2008 and 2014) of SQL Server access the same database or will some king of "conversion" happen to the database?

    Thanks!

you can do an upgrade of sql from 2008 to 2014 which means you'd have the same database, but you would no longer have a server 2008 instance.  if you install a separate instance of sql 2014, you'll need to migrate the database from 2008 to 2014, or you could create a linkserver and consume the data from the 2008 db in your 2014 databases.

You can have named instances on the same machine with different version.  You need to restore your database in the new instance. They are independent of each other. You can use SSMS 2014  (which most people are doing) to access both but you cannot access 2014 version database from SSMS 2012.

It is a good idea to keep a good backup. You cannot restore back your database from 2014 to 2012 easily. It is fairly easy to restore your 2012 version database to 2014 instance.

    ninianne98,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'll keep a backup copy of the original database (for safety sake) and go the upgrade route.

    Thanks!
