programmable debugger RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I read something about new debugging classes in the framework and/or mono some time ago but can't seem to find it now.

Basically what I want to do is take a piece of code (or assembly/pdb), programmatically add breakpoints, step-in/over/out, break on exceptions, watches etc... All that to have a web based debugger.

Is this already possible with the current framework? Any pointers?

    thanks

  • Hi Exstud,

Per my understanding, you need a web based debugger. This is really a big question. What we can do is to let you know where to start it.

If you want that VS has this functionality in the future, I suggest you to post suggestions in our UserVoice site. And others who have the same idea with you will vote on your suggestion.

I have posted a suggestion on UserVoice, you should focus on it. This is the reference below.

  • Thanks for answering Hetro. I added some votes to the suggestion you posted.

I remember now the thing I read was a post by miguel de icaza about a c# eval, which could possibly be used in a 'dynamic' debugger.

I think it would be a great feature for a future framework, but i'd need/want this working in mono and I'm not a patient man. I might have a go at it myself.

Can you tell me more about how the default debugger determines which lines are 'breakpointable'? Does it go to il level or is it language dependent?
