NewsFeed in Sharepont Online

  • Hi,

Looking for any information on Newsfeed in SharePoint Online as it relates to the thumbnail not being presented after pasting a YouTube video URL into a post. The MS documentation states it works, it may have a while ago, but now , we cannot get it to work. Read that the new V3 YouTube API may cause this or even a proxy setting. I understand and tried to present Yammer, Teams and planner as the solution (this function works in these parts), BUT my client is fixed on Newsfeed.

Configuration issue, MS known issue and Newsfeed is not getting this fix or....?

Any information on this issue would be appreciated.

  • Hi John,

This is due to changes made by Google with their YouTube API. Microsoft uses this API to retrieve information about video links posted to the Newsfeed. With the v2 API now completely disabled, these calls will fail and users will no longer see thumbnails or embedded players for YouTube links posted to their feeds.

The current API no longer allows for anonymous read access to YouTube data, additionally they have enforced quota limitations on the reads that can be performed by an application.

After much consideration of the code changes needed to comply with the API changes, Microsoft has decided instead to deprecate this feature for the time being.

Read more form below official blog post:

Microsoft has captured this request in the database for consideration in a future release should it align with the direction of the product at that time. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

As an alternative, you can upload videos to a SharePoint Asset library. The video preview works to display the preview on the Newsfeed for videos stored in a SharePoint Asset library.

    Best regards,

    Linda Zhang
