    Beginning Ajax - Wrox - ISBN 978-0-470-10675-4

    A good clear guide to how & why with AJAX.

    Also read

    Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and AJAX - Apress - ISBN 1-59059-680-3

    Also very readable.

    As for a pure Javascript book

    Beginning Javascript 3rd edition - wrox - ISBN 978-0-470-05151-1

    has never let me down, good book.

    a book I'm looking forward to is this one: http://www.manning.com/gallo/. One of the authors is Garbin, an MVP who's active on the ASP.NET AJAX dedicated forums on this very site.
