individual div widths in nav?

 I've got a very simple 2 level horizontal navigation control working with the css adapter, however each div is taking the width of the longest category name.

 Is there a way to control the width of each individual div?

 It appears adding float:left to the li a got the divs to fit the width of the text, however this effects the sub navs as well, ugh ie6 is the devil.
