Dynamic URLs in add-in manifest RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the newest add-in technology (September 2018), you download an XML manifest that points to a server where you load your html/javascript/css in a task pane on your Office form (e.g. an Outlook Appointment) which is a browser in a sandbox. Works great with many advantages but with this model, it is assumed that there is one server which serves up all customers. It doesn't take into account the fact that some companies have hosted servers and also customers that have their own on premise installations and there are many different versions out in the world therefore many different URLs. I don't see a way to dynamically update the URLs in the XML manifest depending on which server the customer is using short of having to query the user for the server URL after he installs the add-in.

  • Is there a best practice for this issue ?

(The issue being that  a web add-in may need to different URLs which may represent a QA or Prod environment).

Since it is only one file, i assume it is not too much effort to have multiple versions of the Manifest.xml file; each having a different hostdomain for the url.
