Hard-coding password in a .NET application? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are manufacturing instruments controlled by an embedded PC running Windows operating system. We need to develop a .NET desktop application to install on such PCs, and we need to encrypt some files and the SQL Server Compact. It seems to me that I have to hard code the encryption passwords in the .NET application, do I?

Then, if someone reverse engineers the DLL or exe, he will get the encryption password, and then be able to decrypt the files and the database.

Is there a way to prevent this?
