Don't buy a phone at all and save yourself some money.
Visual Studio has built in emulators for common mobile devices, including smart phone and pda formats, so you should be able to do most of your development on those. Only if you get to the point where you want to really test the system should you buy a smart phone... and then buy the cheapest you can get.

hi!
find below link on very good emulator. majority of devices can be tested with it. It can also be easily integrated into Visual Studio 2005.
http://developer.openwave.com/dvl/member/downloadManager.htm?softwareId=23
Visual Studio 2005 comes with very good emulators for a number of devices. (Tools -> Connect to Device)
On the following link you will find basic information about browser types popular on mobile market:
http://www.asp.net/mobile/tested-devices/If you still want to buy a smart phone i highly recommend Blackberry: http://www.discoverblackberry.com/devices/ & Motorola RAZR http://www.store.motorola.com/mot/en/US/adirect/motorola?cmd=catDisplayStyle&catKey=601129 both devices use new generation of browsers and by now I couldn't find appropriate emulator in the internet (documentations only available) for them. It seems the only way to test mobile applications targeted on these devices (extremely popular on the market) is to buy them))
