Page blob

    Question

  • If the type of the storage account is general purpose account and performance tier is standard , does it support page blob ?

Am aware of the fact that blob storage account doesn't support page blob and a general purpose account with premium performance tier will only support page blobs.

  • The answer to your question is yes. If you have a general-purpose storage account in the standard tier, you can create a page blob in your container. General-purpose storage accounts support all storage resource types available today (including block, page, and append blob).

  • Hi Abhilash,

Thank you for posting here! We are happy to assist you.

Page blobs are for random read/write storage, such as VHD's (in fact, page blobs are what's used for Azure Virtual Machine disks). Max. size 1TB. Supported by both regular and Premium Storage.

The differences are very-well documented here

Blob storage accounts support only block and append blobs, and not page blobs. You need to use page blobs. Blob storage accounts do not support page blobs. We generally recommend using block blobs unless you have a specific need for page blobs.

In case you have a general-purpose storage account in which you have stored page blobs and virtual machine disks alongside block and append blob data, this estimation process is not applicable.

Blob storage account currently supports only block and append blobs. VHDs for Azure virtual machines are built on page blobs and so you will not be able to store them in Blob storage accounts

  • Thanks for the information about the blob storage account that it doesn't support page blobs as of now, which i already know and have already mentioned when i asked the question.

As you say "In case you have a general-purpose storage account in which you have stored page blobs and virtual machine disks alongside block and append blob data, this estimation process is not applicable."

Lets assume i dont have anything in container (type blob) the account type is general purpose account with standard performance tier will that support creation of page blob in the container ?

  • Yes, if your storage account type is general purpose then you will be able to create the page blobs in it.

    Reference:

A general-purpose storage account gives you access to Azure Storage services such as Tables, Queues, Files, Blobs and Azure virtual machine disks under a single account.
