Need support in choosing correct WinCE/WindowsMobile development environment RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am working in a project requirement, where a target device is based on Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 OS

We are require to develop a middleware s/w stack over it.

Since, customer is not sharing us the BSP for the device. we are just having the reference board with image flashed over it.

We need to develop the driver or m/w sw stack over the emulator.

I wanted to know, how should I approach to the development phase. Based on Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 OS, What Windows CE / Windows Mobile version of (Plaform Builder) we should setup ?

Somewhere on net, I found like, I can setup the Windows CE 5.0 and choose device emulator for ARM for driver development. Is this approach correct if the target device is based on Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 OS?

Can someone pl. suggest the correct development approach?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Kenshow -

This forum is not the right forum for your question, here is the microsoft home forum for different topics:

From your questions, it appears that you are very new to CE/WM/WEH OS developments. If you are building a CE image then MSDN has tonnes of info and also general internet will get you lots of info.

Here is the link to get info on CE 5 or 6 or 7:

If you are developing a hobby project or like to have fun spending time to figure out how to do stuffs, carry on. If you are looking for professional help, there are several people/companies, including me. Here is one example of a project for WEH:

  • Here are some tips for the correct development approach:

    - WEH 6.5 is for OEMs only, meaning not everyone can develop it.

    - Yes, just like CE, WEH also has a platform builder, plus an AKU for a specific version of WEH. You need to get these from OEM to develop a driver and integrate with the OS image. This is not as easy as CE development, because the final image will have to be certified - LTK certification compliance, if you want to use WM logo.

    - Generally, all WEH 6.5 based devices should behave in a similar fashion, hence to develop an application or any software module which is based on WEH 6.5 OS, you can download the SDK from microsoft at this location:

All you need is Visual studio and this SDK.

    - However, if you want exploit the features of WEH 6.5 like touch/gesture, you will have to install another SDK available from microsoft at:

I hope this helps and answers your question.
