SQLExpress report connection string from another machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am not sure what I seem to be doing wrong here but I cannot seem to make a connection to a machine on my network that is running sqlexpress.  I can connect fine to other machines running MSSQLSERVER, but for some reason sqlexpress isn't taking my connection.

It returns error 40 to me when trying to test a new connection on the report wizard.  I have checked surface area configuration on the sqlexpress machine and both tcp/ip and named pipes is on.

I have tried specifying the full machinename\SqlExpress , also I tried IP_of_machine\SqlExpress, but neither one will properly connect.

When working with my other sqlexpress connection strings inside of a winform I had to use .\SqlExpress, but in this case the report will have a remote datasource so I cant use that same string but I figured that the \SqlExpress had to be there.

Could someone help point me in the right direction on this?

  • Ah, I found the solution to my problem.

Windows Firewall was blocking my sql attempts on the remote machine.
