I have only one sharepoint 2007 site collection https://abc.com/sites/sitecoll1 . we upgrade the site to a different 2010 webserver and the site collection url is https://xyz.com/sites/sitecoll1 Iwant to redirect users who type in https://abc.com/sites/sitecoll1 to https://xyz.com/sites/sitecoll1 also any users going to old subsites https://abc.com/sites/sitecoll1/subsite1 should be redirected to https://xyz.com/sites/sitecoll1/subsite1. Consider IIS Url Rewrite found at http://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/url-rewrite. It's a free Microsoft download for IIS.

Actually the rewrite module is included in IIS7 you don't need to download it.

I know this can be a little too much of a solution but how about creating a httpmodule to do the needful, if you are IIS Url rewrite is not working for you.
There is this nice article from "Waldek Mastykarz" which talk about url redirect
