Workflow Versioning

    Question

  • Good afternoon all,

I was curious how everyone is handling workflow versioning for workflows developed with SharePoint designer.  In particular our group is looking to setup new workflows for user acceptance testing and then roll back if the new workflow is not accepted.

  • Hi Alex,

Can you provide more information about your requirement? Do you want the workflow continue to run until the users accept? If yes, you can use use loop function in the workflow. Workflows in the loop will run repeatedly until the condition is true.

    Best regards,

    Allen Bai

  • In this case it is a rework of business logic for the workflow.  For example, adding a review step, etc.  As new logic is added to the workflow it is necessary to have the user's test and confirm the logic.  In the event that the new logic does not meet expectations there is need to revert back to the previous version of the workflow.

  • Hi Alex,

To restore an old version workflow, you can go to SharePoint Designer > All Files > workflows, find your workflow, expand it until you find the .xoml file and .xml file. Right-click and you will find version history. For more detailed steps, you can refer to below article:

(Pay attention that this solution applies to all versions of SharePoint 2010, 2007, and SharePoint Online with Office 365. This does NOT apply to SharePoint 2013 workflows, but does apply to SharePoint 2010 workflows created in SharePoint 2013.)

    Best regards,

    Allen Bai
