  • Hi, guys i have come on this page and been to other pages and try to read some books and watch some videos but i think all i need is a Mentor Who can help me.
Now i'm ready to pay for the help that i will get(we can set up some kind of pay plan it can be weekly or monthly) now i am a student and working at the same time so i can not set from hours because i'm coaching a 2 rugby teams and playing my self so you can see how much time is left......

now there will be a simple way how we will do this. i will a msg like this with problem you can just tell me what steps should i take to do solve this. now you don't have to right any codes or any thing like that you can just create a to do list kind of thing and i will go through it my self... but some times u can be kind enough to tell me more if u like...

This will be just on the net not by phone or any other way if u don't want...

Please get back asap and yes the person should be knowledgeable enough (i work with Sql server 2008 r2 and on Windows server 2008 r2)
just that you know 30 to 40% of the work is already been taken care of u can just look at it and give me ur view..

  • Hi DesimDB,

Since I'm based in the UK I guess that counts me out as being your mentor. To cut to the chase I think the only realistic approach is for your boss to employ a consultant to mentor you and quantify the issues with your current system, then leave you to maintain and support your system. A decent consultant will probably be expensive, but he or she may be able to deliver what you need in 3 months or less, this of course depends on your detailed requirements.

I could help you short list CVs for a consultant. You could find some by going onto www.LinkedIn.com, click on the people search button, type 'MCTS' as a keyword and of course 'Sweden' as the country. There are lots of people who meet this criteria, it's just whether or not they are available and you are able to pay them the rate they require.

I guess you and your boss will utimately have to discern whether or not you can get on with this consultant.

Please give me some idea of the size of your database system, number of servers, number of tables, number of new transactions each day, that sort of thing. As I asked previously; - Have you got a particular question? This may help us gauge what level of mentoring you require.

Did you find the following after applying my previous advice ? http://www.sqlug.se/

I would commit to spending 1/2 hour or more each day going through the exercises in; - http://www.amazon.com/Self-Paced-Training-70-432-2008-Implementation-2008-Implementation/dp/0735626057/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1297084624&sr=1-2-spell

I know this will take some time, but once you have done this you know too much for me to mentor you anyway.

So in summary I have give you lots of advice, sorry there is nothing which is both fast and cheap.

    Kind Regards,

    Kieran.

  • Hi Kieran, thank you for replying. i have looked at the links you have sent me, i have all those book and i got videos from CBT nuggets as well but i think i would like to have a mentor who can guide me through this and if i have any question they can help me with it. one thing i have to say i have study as DBA and different programming languages but its been a while after doing that i never worked in that area for real, now some month ago i got a job in IT company, the guy was working here as DBA got fired and my boss knew that i have studied this so he gave me chance to recover and i don't want to miss it. so here i am looking to get back at what i started.

those videos and books helps you but not the same way a person can...

  • Hi Kieran, Thank you so much for taking the time and mailing me. My company will never pay for any body to do this job because our database is working but its not as good as it suppose  to be.

i have been working on some of it and i'm sending you some Jpeg image file so you can see how dose it looks. from my side i can pay some money to get help with this, or kind of guide me through this, in this way i will learn my self as well.

now about the database. the database it self is not that big but just little complicated. we have 2 servers (which by the way i need to link so we can see info from both DB's). its around 15 tables in each and more or less 200 to 300 transactions per day. we don't have any transactions from out side just from the sales people and thats not that much.

one main thing is that the guy who got fired he did all the connectivity inside the GUI not the database so that other major issue that the database is very slow. so have made a very nice structure that i'm going to send you.

please send me your Email so i can send them to you. i just find out i can't post those here. or tell me other way to send that...

    Best Regards

    Mann

  • You also need to fully involve you boss in the employment of a mentor / consultant because to gain tangible benefits from having a locally based mentor quickly your mentor will need access to the systems you are working on. There needs to be a formal written agreement  between your mentor and your employer before your mentor is able to see any data, program code and design details from your employer's systems.
