OneDrive for Business app protocol

    Question

  • I'm creating an appportal for Windows 8.1. My goal is to create a tile in my app portal and open the OneDrive for Business app.  In the documentation Microsoft has given there seems to be an app protocol for OneDrive(onedrive:///). This seems logical as other Microsoft apps have the same behaviour (skype:// or lync15://).

However this is not working, also when you check the app manifest from OneDrive for Business you don't see any app protocol. Is this removed or is the documentation Microsoft has given me wrong.

Link to what App Portal is:

    http://www.microsoft.com/enterprise/apportals/default.aspx

    Reproduction steps:

    1. Download the association launch sample for Windows 8.1

    https://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Association-Launching-535d2cec

    2. Install the package

    3. Open step 2: Launching a uri.

Test with wlpeople:// or bingmaps:// and you see the people app opening or bing maps.

If you use onedrive:// nothing happens.

  • Hi Sander,

Thanks for your feedback, I cannot see onedrive:/// works even I have OneDrive app installed on my device.

I will consult some senior engineers to see if we can explain you better. Thanks for your understanding.

  • Hi Sander,

Here is the update, I don't think OneDrive register the protocol as we can see from the system registry, I suspect the OneDrive App did not support activating from URI.

However there is no documentation to describe whether an app is able to be activated from URI (it is a feature belongs the App itself). But the 2 articles below should help you have a better understand of the URI activating.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa767914(v=vs.85).aspx

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb266526(v=vs.85).aspx#ph_ovw_indexing_datastores

Anyway we would like to know in which documentation you get the message that we can open Onedrive App by protocol activation?

  • Hi James,

I understand how URI activation is working :)

We are using this method to navigate between different custom apps.

The documentation is on this website:

    www.microsoft.com/enterprise/apportals/getstarted/default.aspx

    Name of the document: AppPortal_OverviewGuide_Ver1.pdf

I also try to find contact with a Microsoft Advisor, but heard nothing yet :)
