Kinect integration in Windows 8 RRS feed

  • Okay so it's been almost 10 months since MSFT released the amazing "Kinect Effect" video in which the world opened it's eyes to endless possibilities of this really cool hardware. Add in a great Kinect-focused speech from Ballmer at CES and a whole Kinect accelerator, it looks like it will make a splash on PC.

    However, Windows 8 is readily approaching, yet there is no confirmation of Kinect apps specifically for Windows 8. Also, it doesn't look like Xbox is opening up an indie marketplace for the many Kinect apps that developers around the world are currently working on.

    So, my question is-- what are we supposed to do with our great Kinect apps designed for the PC? Is Microsoft going to push Kinect apps for Windows 8? 

    How can we get our Kinect apps to the people in the near future?

  • Yes the runtime it appears will be in windows 8 but timeline is not stated. I was just a few months ago talking in windows 8 forum and the ms guys said it would be in their but as to time i dont know.

  • The folks over at InterKnowlogy have published a couple of videos that say that the problem is that the Kinect SDK is currently .NET 4 code that you cannot run in WinRT. My understanding of their (workaround) solution was that they wrote a service running on a desktop that connects to the Kinect. The service makes the Kinect data available through a websocket interface. The WinRT client then makes RESTful calls to the service.

    Can someone from Microsoft confirm that the Kinect SDK is not currently compatible with WinRT? If so, when will it be?

  • "We tested SDK v1.5 and Toolkit v1.5.1 on top of Windows 8 Release Preview and found no new problems. Although that is not yet a supported production platform for Kinect for Windows, we continue to track well towards supporting it sometime after Windows 8 ships."

  • WinRT support is in our current backlog, and we are working on it. The 1.5 SDK and (newly released) 1.5.2 Toolkit run and compile on Win8.
