Striping disks for the first time RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am attempting to strip disks on an Azure VM to improve disk access for our SQL Server machines. At this point it's purely a discover exercise on how it works.

In my basic example i have 2 P10 (128gig) disks and have stripped this with the following settings:

    • Simple Layout
    • 2 columns / 256k interleave (it's for a data warehouse)
    • Fixed provisioning
    • Max size disk

When created I end up with a 254gig drive.

What i don't understand is why the drive is basically the same size as the two disks added together. As we are getting double the IOPS and double the throughput of one disk how can we still be utilising the total storage space. Is this because it's spreading the data evenly across the two disks and when the drive is accessed both drives can help to return the required file information.

It's probably a silly question but this is all new to me and not what i expected.

    Regards.

    Simon.
